Electronic Travel Authorization to enter Canada
What is the Canadian eTA?
As of March 2016, all tourist visas to Canada were replaced by the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
The eTA is an entry requirement for all visa-free foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. It should be noted that the eTA is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport. It is valid for 5 years from the time it is granted. Please, note that if you renew your passport, you must apply for a new eTA.

If you do not write the personal details exactly as they appear in your passport, you can have your application unfortunately rejected.
To ensure that the application is approved and valid visitors will have to ensure that they include the following details:
- Full name as it appears on passport
- Passport number
- Permanent Address
- Date and place of birth
- Marital Status
What is the validity of the Canadian eTA?
The Electronic Travel Authorization for Canada is valid for 5 years or until the traveler’s passport expires.
The number of times you can enter Canada during the validity period of your e-Visa is unlimited.
Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): How do I get it?
When planning to go on holiday or business trip, we must bear in mind that documents such as visa and passport are very important, as well as other details such as flight reservation or accommodation. If you are tempted to fly to Canada, you have probably heard about the new migration requirement to get there: the Electronic Travel Authorization.
Adventurers from all over the world must obtain their eTA before traveling to Canada. The eTA is a document that allows you to travel to Canada by air and travel freely within the country. It is an entry requirement for visa-free foreigners traveling or transiting Canada by air.
Submit your application online
Unlike the old VISA application system, the Electronic Travel Authorization application must be made online using this form. It is best to deal with your application as soon as you decide to plan a trip to Canada. Each trip must have an official estimated time of arrival. Children are also included in this new requirement. You can make a one-time application for all members of your family. It is possible to do it instead of someone else.
As stated above, the eTA application form is available online. It takes a few minutes to download the eTA after approval. A representative may apply in place of the traveler, such as a parent or guardian.
Note that no one (including children) may cross the Canadian border without the eTA.
Wait for validation
Once you’ve finished filling out the form, there’s nothing left to do but check your mailbox.
Most eTA applications are approved in a matter of minutes and therefore an application can be submitted close to the scheduled departure date. However, it is recommended that travellers who need an eTA submit their request well in advance of their planned departure date, as some requests may require more time to process. If this is the case for your application, you can expect an email from the IRCC within 72 hours informing you of your next steps.
You can then check the status of your eTA application by clicking on the tool reserved for this function and using your application number and passport details.
The Electronic Travel Authorization is valid for a period of five years from the day it is issued to the applicant or until the first day of the following days, if they occur before the end of that period:
- The expiry date of the applicant’s passport or other travel document, or
- The day on which the electronic travel authorisation is cancelled, or
- The day on which a new electronic travel authorisation is issued to the applicant.
Fundamentals of the Canadian eTA
The Canadian eTA is very similar to the digital travel verification systems that exist in many developed countries, such as the United States and Australia. As its name suggests, the eTA confirms a person’s suitability to travel to Canada. It is similar to a typical visa and is often referred to as the “mini visa” of Canada, however, the application and release of an eTA will be completed entirely online.
Scope of the visa
Foreigners from visa-free countries will be affected by the eTA system, i.e. those from certain European nations, as well as New Zealand and Australia. Because Canadians are not restricted to travel in the United States, U.S. citizens are likely to enjoy the same benefit, which means they will not need an eTA to travel to Canada. Foreigners who have to apply for visas to travel to Canada will also be exempt from eTA, as they have their own travel approval process.
Benefits of the eTA system
The central purpose of the eTA is to facilitate the path for eligible persons to travel to Canada. Since it will be easier to identify undesirable or inadmissible parties, such as those without flight orders or criminal records, it will be easier to prevent them from entering the country. Therefore, the manpower and funds that are allocated to send these people back to their place of origin will be reduced and, in the long run, will save the government potentially crucial resources.
The enactment of the eTA program will also achieve Canada’s loyalty to the shared vision they and the U.S. have for improving their border security and developing economic competitiveness, which in turn will accelerate the flow of people and goods while maintaining the strength of their partnership.
It is believed that the need for an eTA will deter some foreigners who are well aware of their ineligibility to apply for one, especially as certain personal data are required before leaving their place of residence.
The eVisa will also give CIC a way to collect data and track the travel patterns of foreigners who are visa exempt. The government did not have a way to do this before, as until now there was no pre-selection process for foreigners.
The eTA programme is also an introduction to a new tool that will allow for clearer and more personal risk assessments for foreigners than was possible with previous visa requirements. Once such a system is in place, it must be taken into account when conducting strategic discussions on the visa policy framework and any changes discovered must be implemented.
